How to Renew an ENS Domain and Check Its Expiry
Understand extension, grace periods and the difference between renewal and ownership.
For a second-level .eth name, extending the registration keeps its expiry date in the future. It does not change who owns the name.
Review the expiry first
Open the name in the official ENS App and check its ownership information. Use the current Extend flow to choose a period or expiry date and review the fee before approving.
If the name has expired
ENS documents a 90-day grace period in which a name can still be extended. Added time is measured from the previous expiry date. A short extension may therefore leave an already-expired name within grace.
After grace, the name must be registered again under the applicable release and premium rules. Confirm its exact status in the official app.
Keep ownership separate
Someone else can pay to extend a name without acquiring it. Verify the owner and expiry independently, and keep a reminder for names you depend on.
A worked expiry example
Suppose a name expired 45 days ago. Adding only 30 days to its original expiry would leave it expired. Choose a term that carries the registration beyond today and into the period you intend to keep using it. Review the resulting expiry shown by the official app before confirming.
A simple maintenance routine
- Keep a list of the names that support a real project or identity.
- Record the controlling wallet and current expiry for each.
- Set a reminder early enough to review the decision and complete the extension.
- After confirmation, verify the new expiry and update your record.
Renewal is not a transfer
A payment to extend the term and a change of ownership solve different problems. If you are helping another person maintain a name, agree on the purpose first and verify the owner independently of the renewal result.
