ENS vs Basenames: How .eth and .base.eth Differ

Why a .base.eth name belongs in the ENS conversation, and what to check before choosing.

Basenames use the ENS naming architecture. A name such as yourname.base.eth is a subname under base.eth, with registration infrastructure deployed on Base.

Compare your intended experience

An ENS .eth name and a Basename have different name formats and registration contexts. That does not make them unrelated competing naming standards. ENS documents Basenames as adhering to its specifications.

Start by asking which name format you want to present and where your identity should appear. Then verify the relevant app's current support, including how it handles primary names.

Include ongoing management

Coinbase's Basenames documentation describes renewal and expiration behavior. Include those responsibilities in your choice rather than treating a name as a one-time setup task.

Before you register

  • Confirm the complete name, including .base.eth where applicable.
  • Review the registration term and final quote in the official app.
  • Check the current primary-name instructions for your network.
  • Keep a record of the expiry date and ownership wallet.

Use the full name in your comparison

Write the complete names side by side: for example, a hypothetical yourproject.eth and yourproject.base.eth. Ask how each will appear in the apps your community uses, and whether that format communicates the identity you want.

A three-part verification

  1. Registration: check the exact name and current term in the relevant official app.
  2. Identity: follow the current primary-name guidance for the intended network.
  3. Display: verify the result in each application that matters to you.

These checks help distinguish a registration problem from an app-display problem. If a name exists but does not appear where expected, investigate the specific lookup and primary-name behavior before changing the registration itself.

Keep a maintenance note

For either choice, record the complete identifier, controlling wallet, expiry date and where you verified it. That small record is useful when someone else later helps maintain the project.
