Can You Make Money with Web3 Domains? Claims, Costs and Royalties
Examine resale, royalties, referrals and reseller margins, with provider terms and a hypothetical sales calculator.
Earnings depend on a buyer, a qualifying referral or a paying customer. Buying a name alone does not establish an income stream.
Four different ways providers describe earning
| Model | What triggers revenue? | What needs checking? |
|---|---|---|
| Resale | A buyer actually completes a purchase. | Acquisition cost, renewals, selling fees and time without a sale. |
| TLD royalties | Qualifying registrations beneath an extension. | License cost, eligible revenue and payout rules. |
| Referrals | An attributed customer completes an eligible action. | Approval, attribution, tier requirements and withdrawal terms. |
| Reseller margin | Your customer pays more than your supplier and operating costs. | Wholesale terms, support work, payment fees and refunds. |
Freename: the royalty claim
Freename advertises up to 50% registration royalties and a $99/year royalty license. The percentage describes a share of qualifying activity, not a return on the amount you spend. Its terms make payment subject to program conditions and the relevant refund period.
Work out the sales hurdle
A hypothetical royalty calculation, using your own costs. This is arithmetic, not a forecast or a verified vendor payout.
10 qualifying sales to cover $99 in annual costs.
At $10 per qualifying sale, 10 sales produce $100 before other costs. Excludes buying the TLD, advertising, taxes, refunds and transaction costs. If no qualifying sales happen, gross royalties are $0 while the entered costs remain.
Unstoppable: resale and partner revenue
Unstoppable's sale guide advertises a 3% service fee and says its Web3 marketplace listings require Polygon-minted domains. A listing price is the seller's request; it does not prove that a buyer will pay it.
The partner page describes reseller markups and an affiliate purchase flow. We did not verify a universal commission rate or a guaranteed partner income. Check product coverage and your own agreement before calculating margins.
SNS: referral claims need a migration check
Older SNS referral documentation describes rewards up to 20% and a 5% referee discount at the top holding tier. It uses legacy .sol terminology. We have not confirmed that those terms apply unchanged after the .sns migration, so we do not present them as an active offer.
Read gross revenue and profit separately
Start with actual money received. Subtract buying the name, renewals, licenses, selling fees, transaction costs, advertising and other expenses that apply. Treat unpaid balances and tokens separately from money you can withdraw and use.
A useful record identifies the period, qualifying sales, received payouts and every cost. A vendor's successful example cannot establish what a new buyer will earn. We have not verified typical participant earnings for the programs above.
Before acting on an income pitch
- Identify who pays and the exact event that creates a payable balance.
- Ask which charges continue in a year with zero sales.
- Check attribution, refunds, payout thresholds and withdrawal conditions.
- Inspect completed transactions, rather than asking prices or promotional screenshots.
Use the provider directory and cost comparison to examine the exact product. This article explains business models and arithmetic; it does not forecast your results.
