Web3 Domain Costs: Renewals, Gas and Optional Tools

Compare purchase prices, recurring charges and optional tools before choosing a Web3 domain or promotion.

A low entry price answers only one part of the cost question. Compare the same name, term and intended use.

Keep five costs separate

  1. Acquisition: the available-name registration price or the seller's asking price.
  2. Keeping the name: renewal obligations over your intended holding period.
  3. Transactions: registration, record updates, transfers and other onchain actions.
  4. Optional services: royalty licenses, reseller tools, hosting or subscriptions you actually choose.
  5. Selling: commissions, payment processing and the cost of finding a buyer.

Example: the same ENS name over three years

Using the documented $5 annual base fee for a 5+ character .eth name, three years is $15 before gas. That arithmetic excludes any temporary release premium or resale price. The ETH amount and transaction cost must be checked at the time of payment.

Example: optional royalty tools

A provider can advertise no renewal on a Web3 name and still charge annually for a separate service. Record each purchased product on its own line. Freename's royalty program is an example to examine in the provider profile.

Keep ETH-denominated fees in ETH until you state an exchange-rate assumption. Keep recurring services separate from a one-time name purchase. The result will be more useful than comparing a discounted first payment with somebody else's annual price.

What to save from the checkout

Record the full name, product type, registration term, currency, renewal terms, separate add-ons and the date of the quote. You can then decide whether a promotion lowers the cost of something you already intended to buy.
