How to Set Your ENS Primary Name
Understand the two-way link between your name and your wallet.
A primary name helps compatible apps display a readable name when they look up your wallet address.
Check both directions
The name needs to point to your address, and the address needs a corresponding primary-name record. A registration appearing in your account is not, by itself, proof that this two-way relationship is configured.
Use the official setup flow
Open the ENS App's current primary-name instructions for your wallet and network. Review the address record and the name you are setting before approving any changes.
Verify the result
Check the address lookup in the ENS App, then check the application where you intend to use the name. Allow for caching, and verify the app supports the relevant record type and network.
Different apps can display the same identity differently. Keep a note of the app and network you checked when diagnosing a display problem.
A worked configuration check
Consider a hypothetical yourproject.eth intended to represent wallet A. First confirm that the name's address record points to wallet A. Then check that wallet A's primary-name record points back to the same name. If you are looking at wallet B in a different app, the display may not answer the question you intended to test.
What to record after setup
- The exact name and wallet address you configured.
- The network and primary-name type used.
- The confirmed change and its transaction reference, where applicable.
- The app where you checked the resulting identity.
If the display is still unexpected
Use our name-not-showing checklist to separate a record mismatch from application support or caching. That makes the next action more specific and reduces unnecessary configuration changes.
