ENS vs Unstoppable Domains: Costs, Compatibility and Ownership
Compare naming models, ongoing costs and the compatibility checks that matter.
Begin with the name you want and the apps where you intend to use it. Then compare the total cost and management rules for that exact product.
Compare the actual products
ENS second-level .eth names have recurring registration fees and transaction costs. Unstoppable offers both Web3 names and conventional DNS domains; those product types have different management and renewal rules.
Unstoppable's support documentation excludes its Web3 names from renewal-price operations. That distinction should not be applied to every domain sold by the company.
Use this decision checklist
- Does your intended wallet support the exact naming system?
- What are the registration, renewal and transaction costs?
- Can you update the records and transfer the name as you expect?
- What happens if an app does not recognize it?
Our approach
Choose around a specific workflow rather than a universal winner. A useful comparison records the exact extension, app, network and date checked. This comparison explains the decision criteria rather than claiming a hands-on test of every wallet.
Make a comparison you can actually use
| Question | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Will it work in my wallet? | The exact app, network, name type and supported action. |
| What will I pay? | The current checkout quote, term, renewal model and transaction costs. |
| Can I manage it? | The controls for records, ownership and transfer. |
| What happens later? | Expiry rules, recovery options and any dependence on a parent name or service. |
A useful decision rule
If a particular identity format is important to your audience, begin there. If the main requirement is a specific wallet workflow, begin with that app's documented support. When several options satisfy the same need, compare the full ownership and maintenance experience rather than the introductory price alone.
We do not assign a universal winner here. A recommendation becomes meaningful only when its assumptions match your intended use.
