How to Register a Basename: .base.eth Setup

Register a Basename with fee and discount checks, wallet preparation, primary-name setup and a renewal checklist.

Get a Basename through the official Basenames registration app at base.org/names. Choose the complete .base.eth identifier, connect the wallet that should own it, review the registration term and quote, and follow the app’s wallet prompts. After confirmation, check ownership and configure the identity you want supported apps to display.

Before you begin

Choose for the apps you use on Base and record the complete name, including .base.eth.

  1. 01Choose the exact available name
  2. 02Review the term and wallet request
  3. 03Check profile, primary name and renewal

Decide whether a Basename fits the task

A recognizable Base identity may be useful when that is where your audience already interacts. Write down the actual action you need, such as name display in an app or a supported recipient lookup. Use ENS versus Basenames if you are comparing the naming formats.

Keep selection separate from registration. Prepare a few readable alternatives instead of choosing a confusing abbreviation at the last moment. A hypothetical name in this article is not an availability result, and finding a label available does not establish brand clearance.

Read the registration quote before connecting the pieces

Label lengthPublished annual registration fee
3 characters0.1 ETH
4 characters0.01 ETH
5–9 characters0.001 ETH
10+ characters0.0001 ETH

These are the official published tiers reviewed on 23 October 2026. Read the selected term and any live discount in the app. A lower introductory amount does not describe the later renewal obligation. Keep the quote in ETH unless you explicitly record a separate exchange-rate assumption.

As an arithmetic example, two years at the 5–9-character tier gives a 0.002 ETH term component before a discount or other quoted items. This is not a current availability check or a completed checkout. The Basenames provider guide gives more pricing context.

Register and verify the result

  1. Open the official Basenames app and search for your intended name.
  2. Inspect the full identifier and whether it is available for registration.
  3. Connect the intended owner wallet. Confirm the wallet account and requested network rather than relying on its account nickname.
  4. Review the selected registration period, eligibility adjustments and total shown by the app.
  5. Read the wallet requests and complete only the actions matching that registration.
  6. After confirmation, reopen the name and check the owner and expiry in the management view.

This is a documentation-based workflow. We have not connected a wallet or executed a Basename registration for this guide. Interface labels and available wallet options can change; the official app’s current review step is the place to confirm the exact transaction.

Can I get a free Basename?

The official registration page lists eligibility-based discounts limited to one use per address. Eligibility for one introductory name does not make all names or future renewals free. Compare the displayed eligible amount, chosen length and term before treating a promotion as part of your budget.

The Coinbase FAQ also describes sponsored registration gas when using Coinbase Wallet. Check whether that sponsorship applies to your current wallet and flow. A sponsored transaction fee and a waived registration charge are separate things.

Set the display identity and limit the public profile

The documented primary-name route is My Basenames, the name’s menu, then Set as primary. Confirm the resulting transaction and check it in an app that supports Basenames. An NFT appearing in a wallet does not demonstrate that the app’s identity display supports it.

Publish only the profile details you intend to make public. Coinbase describes saved profile information as onchain. For a project, agree on the public contact route before copying personal details into a profile form.

Leave a useful maintenance record

Save the complete name, intended owner, expiry, selected app workflow and date of your verification. Add one practical reminder with enough time to decide whether to renew. If another person will maintain the project, have them check the name independently using the same brief.

For a future handover, follow the official Basename transfer guide. It distinguishes ownership, management and address resolution. A marketplace NFT transfer alone is not the complete documented setup handover.

Finished when: the exact Basename is owned by the intended wallet, the expiry is recorded, and the intended app behavior has been checked separately.
